Tips for applying mulch
What kind of mulch should you use?
Both types of mulch reduce water loss in the soil, improve soil quality, and slow weed growth. So, your choice will depend on color and how you wish to enhance your landscaping. Natural options typically fade faster based on how much sunlight they receive.
How much mulch do you need?
We recommend applying mulch in a three-inch-thick layer. At that depth, each yard of mulch will cover approximately 100 square feet. Place it around and between plants, allowing for an inch or two of space from the stems.
Should you put geotextile fabric underneath your mulch?
Mulch naturally helps cut down on most of your weeds and makes any that come up easier to pull. However, applying a weed barrier first can further prevent weeds from growing from underneath the mulch.
What do you do after putting down mulch?
Rake or “fluff” your mulch periodically to prevent it from packing down and repelling rain. Replenish, as needed, to maintain the recommended thickness and prevent weed seeds from germinating and growing.
Playground safety fiber
Our playground safety fiber is a safe, natural, accessible, and resilient hardwood fiber designed for use under playground structures. It’s also suitable for jogging trails, dog runs, and horse arenas.
Why playground safety fiber?
Installed at the recommended depth of 12 feet, it protects a child falling from 12 feet high. Regular wood chips may do the same, but they aren’t certified to do so.
It’s also safer than rubber mulches because it’s made from all-natural materials. As rubber mulch heats up, it releases toxic gasses that have been found to cause irritation of the nasal and respiratory passages, central nervous system damage, depression, headaches, nausea, dizziness, eye and kidney damage, and dermatitis.
What it is — and what it’s not
Playground safety fiber meets or exceeds U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission guidelines and is IPEMA-certified. Made from raw hardwood chips, it doesn’t contain twigs, bark, leaf debris, or wood that’s painted or treated in other ways.
